The focus of our tours, western Liguria (Ponente), is less explored and often overlooked in favour of eastern Liguria (Levante) and showcases its raw beauty, stark landscapes and awesome vistas.

It includes walks on panoramic wine routes, a panoramic train ride into and thru the Ligurian Alps, a trip across the border into France and the Principality of Monaco or the market where chefs in Monaco shop at; a bike ride-with the option of electric bicycle or carts on a converted old railway track, along the coastline, the longest bike-track in Europe.

There will be plenty of routes inland from Sanremo (entroterra) - they offer stunning sights of pretty, unspoiled rock villages, Liguria's real draw.

Trekking in Liguria

We visit wineries and vineyards – some that are regarded as amongst the most spectacular in the world – olive oil mills, medieval bridges, mountain streams, ex-army roads, fortifications, museums unique in their kind in Europe, sanctuaries and frescos of renowned painters, even the smallest theatre in the world.

There will be the more modern adrenalin-raising fun driving experience of cruising on the spectacular Autostrada dei Fiori - a culmination of Italian engineering.

Meeting place

There will be a set meeting time in Nice (Nizza) Airport, Ventimiglia Train station or your prior accommodation, as per initial arrangements. We can provide you with information on how to get there upon request.

We will be staying in Dolceacqua, a romantic, medieval town on the banks of river Nervia, just a leap from the French border, in the middle of homonym DOC appellation.

Detailed Itinerary Liguria

Piccolo Tour - Day Highlights

Day 1 - arrival day, we introduce you to Dolceacqua its surroundings and the local wine and food. Early evening wine tasting in an Enoteca within the castle followed by Dinner.

Day 2 - Drive up one of the most beautiful coastal valley on the Riviera, Nervia Valley and enjoy a combination of beautiful scenery, picturesque medieval villages and great Ligurian food. Visits to Rocchetta Nervina and the stream, torrente Barbaira, enjoy magnificent views over the stream’s crystal clear, turquoise ponds and charming cascades; visit to a local olive mill, frantoio, and meet the olive oil producer in Isolabona, admire the most picture-perfect Apricale and its pretty stuning setting; spectacular, scenic drive to Pigna and Castelvittorio. Lunch and Dinner based on regional specialities.

Day 3 - Mercato in Ventimiglia in the morning, a very impressive Mediterranean food market, a place where Michelin-starred chefs based in France and Monaco buy their produce. In the afternoon we drive up to Airole and visit one of the most spectacularly located vineyards in the world, listen to its fascinating history as told by its founder, and taste the wine grown on rocks. Descend into the splendid town at the foot of the hill for a stroll and dinner complemented by the local wines.

Day 4 - Drive to Realdo, a seemingly lost but fascinating mountain village at 1000m altitude. We do excursions around this area on top of the world then walk down to Triora, the village of witches and home of the best bread Liguria has to offer. We sample the local cucina bianca – characteristic for mountain villages. On the way down we stop in a delightful place to visit the remains of an ancient village destroyed by earthquake and brought back to life by a group of artists. Return to Nice or to Ventimiglia train station.

Via Di Mezzo Tour - Day Highlights

Lunch and Dinner based on regional specialities.

Day 3 - Ferrovia to and through the Alps. We take a train trip up North, on a historic railway that will take us from sea level to over 1000m altitude, cutting through the Ligurian Alps, over bridges and viaducts through spectacular landscape all the way to Piedmont. We get off in the sky resort of Limone, Piedmont, and indulge in some gentle stroll around the town. On the return journey we stop for an Art and Nature excursion – on a balcony, panoramic path, right on the border of Italy and France to shrine noted for its collection of paintings dating back from 15th century by Giovanni Canavesio.

Day 4 - Visit one of the most spectacularly located vineyards in the world, listen to its fascinating history as told by its founder, and taste the wine grown on rocks. Descend into Airole, the splendid town at the foot of the hill for a stroll and lunch complemented by the local wines.

Few options for the afternoon: we visit two very different museums: one beautifully located, unique, at Balzi Rossi famous for triple burial of the Homo Sapiens; an original song museum build in a railway carriage from early 20th century; a drive to an open air museum, Valloria and its painted doors.

Day 5 - To the Arroscia Valley in the morning – the home to a small DOC wine of Liguria. Learn about the local wines thru a visit to a landmark, 50 YO organic grape grower and vigneron. Food and Wine matching at the end of our trip. Visit the smallest theatre in the world and an unusual mask museum. In the afternoon we Drive through the country of Pigato and sample the wines. Short visit to Albenga. A driving experience of cruising on the spectacular Autostrada dei Fiori - a culmination of Italian engineering.

Day 6 - Mercato in Ventimiglia in the morning, a very impressive Mediterranean food market, a place where Michelin-starred chefs based in France and Monaco buy their produce. In the afternoon we drive to Taggia and walk on one of the best preserved Roman bridges in Liguria. We end the day in Bussana Vecchia, a fascinating place and visit the remains of an ancient village destroyed by earthquake and brought back to life by a group of artists. Return to Nice or to Ventimiglia train station.

The Gran Tour - Day Highlights

Day 1 – Meet Up in Nice, drive to Dolceacqua. introduction to the local wines -  evening wine tasting in the Enoteca within the castle.

Day 2 – An introduction to Liguria – walking around the town in the morning. Afternoon winery visit and gentle walk through Arcagna cru vineyards in the surrounding hills.

Day 3 - Rocchetta Nervina and morning walks along torrente Barbaira, a pristine river, famous for canyoning. In the afternoon we visit to a local olive mill, frantoio, and meet the olive oil producer.

Day 5 - Three countries in one day - Drive to Menton (France). Stroll on a forshore promenade into Principality of Monaco.

Day 6 - Into the High Country - on an ancient salt route between Nervia and Roya Valleys, to vineyards with a spectacular view. Winery visit.

Day 7 - To Ventimiglia market this morning - where the chefs in Montecarlo shop. Seaside ride in the afternoon. The first stage of Giro d’Italia 2015 was held on this former railway track line now turned into a picturesque bike track. We end the day in the village of Valloria, famous for its painted doors.

Day 8 - Ferrovia to and thru the Alps - train trip on a historic railway that takes us from sea level to over 1000m altitude through the Ligurian Alps. Art and Nature excursion on the border of Italy and France.

Day 9 - Catch Up/Rest day

Day 10 – A Day of Discovery – Unknown Liguria, country of Ormeasco DOC. Excursion between forts and vines in the high valley of Aroscia. Winery visit.

Day 11 – In the shepherds’ country - drive to a seemingly lost, out of this world mountain village at 1000m altitude, in the high valley of Argentina in the Brigasca country. Sample the local cucina bianca, characteristic for mountain villages. On the way down we stop in a delightful place to visit the remains of an ancient village destroyed by earthquake and brought back to life by a group of artists.

Day 12 - Transfer to Ventimiglia train station and Nice airport.
